佛教源于五竺，但印度故尚口耳相传，加之历史概念不彰，故对佛教关键人物和事件皆难索解。面对此一挑战，碑刻铭文和其他考古资料被证明具有不可替代之价值。在印度次大陆发现的铭文中，有许多与佛教有关，对它们的研究为研究印度和南亚佛教的历史、哲学、社会和其他各方面提供了基础。

基于佛教金石学的重要性，2019 年8月20日至21日，我们在牛津大学圣安妮学院（St Anne’s College）举办了“中亚和东亚地区的佛教金石雕造、保存和研读”研讨会，以此来推动佛教石刻碑铭领域之中的学术研究。在本次研讨会上，来自欧美东亚地区的22 位与会专家学者在佛教文献、考古、历史与社会学等领域之中展开了深入的交流，讨论主题共分为“石刻造像”、“石刻地域所见佛教”、“佛教墓志铭”、“佛教石经”、“佛教石刻材料所见禅宗与密宗”、以及“佛教石刻所见的士大夫、皇族妇女、地方网络与神圣叙述”等六个部会单元。我们挑选其中12篇论文加以编辑整理，出版为此书。
