玄奘(602 ?–664)法师是一位在中国历史上颇为罕见的,能够在僧界俗众、上层精英与普罗大众、政界与民间、整个东亚与南亚世界、七世纪以降之历史与现实等诸多层面皆具深远影响之人物。在僧界他是千年一遇的得道高僧,非仅以学识而炫人,其精勤超卓,事迹与德行尤其感召了一代又一代的各国僧侣 ;而对在家人,即使非为佛教徒,其行高操清也足堪楷模。就学术意义而言,其所作出的杰出翻译成就、对印度佛教学与逻辑学最新思想的忠实引介与精研、创建具有广泛影响力的唯识宗派等,都已经在过去的学界研究与本书之中得到了很好的展示 ; 在民间,自其去世之日始,也日渐圣化,而最终演变出了无数的传奇故事,直至以《西游记》之中的唐僧这一形象而家喻户晓。在生前,玄奘就受到了帝王将相的虔诚拥戴 ;而自舍世之时起,更成为了万千民众顶礼崇拜的对象。然而即使如此,围绕着这位生活在一千四百多年前的伟人周围,我们依然可以发现诸多有待研究的谜团。
因此,2018 年 8月16–19 日,我们举行了“首届玄奘与丝路文化国际研讨会”。会议结束之后,我们很快收集了经过部分与会者精心草拟的论文,这些论文以中、英双语的形式出版。本论文集中所收录的共 13 篇英文论文,正是这次会议之中部分成果。
