公元四至五世纪正是佛教中国化最为关键的时期之一，而此一时期出生于现在中国山西省长治市襄垣县，俗姓龚的出家僧人法显在很多方面都在此一伟大的历史进程中留下了自己深深的烙印。正如我们在本论文集中将要看到的，法显的意义并非仅仅只是身兼得道高僧、虔诚信徒、伟大的旅行家与卓越的佛经翻译家，而真正在于他所具有的典范意义，故而在其身后不但吸引了一代又一代像玄奘、义净这样的追随者来步武法显的足迹，更重要的是树立了一座求法僧群体坚韧不拔、虽千万里而吾其往矣的精神丰碑。
我们也正是秉承此一宗旨，于2017 年3 月25–29 日举办了题名为「从襄垣到锡兰：汉僧法显 (337–422) 其生平与遗产」的法显国际研讨会。此次会议共吸引了来自十三个国家与地区的共三十三位佛教学者，因此是一次具有相当代表性的法显国际学术会议。本次会议仍可算是对于过去百年来法显学研究的一次相当全面的检阅。而我们在整部论文集的最后，所附录的过去法显研究的目录，也可以说是对于这个说法的一个较为用心的脚注。本次研讨会参会文章的研究范围除了包括传统的法显生平历史、翻译文献，更重要的是将法显放在了整个南亚、中亚与东亚时代大背景之下加以考察，故而具有相当恢阔的宏观视野。通过法显记录，我们可以以这个参照物来作为研究原点，将研究范围扩展到法显时代的印度次大陆与锡兰岛的宗教与社会学，以此来透视当时这个较乏历史记载的区域之中的微观史实现象。这种研究模式，与会者也同样将之贯彻到了中亚与东亚法显时代的宗教学与社会学研究之中。除了共时性的宗教学研究，本次会议参会者也非常注重历时性的探讨，因为法显所具有的典范性重要意义使其在其身后留下了一个巨大的影像遗存。
在这本英文法显会议论文集中，我们收录了7篇英文文章和6篇原为中文的英译文章，以便向英语国家的佛教学者展示这次会议的主要成果。
